The cashier tells the elderly couple in front of me that they’ll have to buy a paper bag, if they want one.
They freak out. The man asks, “Since when do you pay for paper bags at the store?”
It’s a rhetorical question, but another customer says it’s been the law in California for years. Then he says, “Welcome to California, folks.”
The couple refuses to buy a bag. “We’ll carry it out,” the husband tells his wife. “This state has gone to pot.”
“What’s the world coming to,” his wife says.
