I press the crosswalk button and wait.
A moment later, another pedestrian arrives. She presses the button a half-dozen times, rapid-fire.
I can’t help but look over. She can’t help but explain.
“I’m in a hurry.”
She returns to the button, jabs it without mercy, like it’s the Fire button on the Centipede video game.
My eyes find the other crosswalk signal, the one regulating the other direction of the intersection. It’s counting down from 10.
So now the contest is afoot: how many times can she press that button in 10 seconds?
